MetaPos

The MetaPos project is developing innovative ways of matching appropriate position determining technology (PDT) to different location services.

Developers of location services now have a broad choice of PDTs with diverse characteristics and different strengths and weaknesses. For example GPS is high accuracy, but power hungry and has poor coverage in dense urban and indoor locations. WiFi positioning has lower accuracy and limited coverage away from built up areas, but works well in exactly the locations where GPS fails. There are many emerging positioning technologies that can be added to this mix. MetaPos will develop a grey box solution to fusing these technologies, allowing developers a single interface to available PDTs that they can configure based upon their unique requirements.

As part of this work, MetaPos will also create accuracy information for each PDT, and assess how this varies over space.
